The Secret Process Behind Making Natural Kannauj Attar Oils

In a world dominated by synthetic perfumes and chemical-based fragrances, Kannauj continues to stand as a symbol of purity and tradition. Every drop of Kannauj attar carries the soul of nature — extracted from flowers, herbs, and woods — through a process that has remained unchanged for centuries. At Nature’s Essence Perfumers, we proudly preserve this sacred art, crafting attars the same way our ancestors did generations ago.
🌿 The Ancient Art of Attar Distillation The process of creating natural attar is known as Deg-Bhapa, a traditional hydro-distillation method that has been practiced in Kannauj for over 400 years. It is completely manual, eco-friendly, and chemical-free. Let’s take a closer look at how this magical process unfolds: Harvesting Nature’s Ingredients Early each morning, fresh flowers like rose, jasmine, kewra, or champa are handpicked before sunrise, when their aroma is strongest. Roots like vetiver and herbs like henna or saffron are also collected depending on the attar being made. Preparation of the Deg (Copper Vessel) The flowers are placed in large copper pots called Degs, which are filled with pure water. These Degs are then sealed tightly using natural clay to prevent any steam leakage. The Bhatti (Traditional Fireplace) The Degs are gently heated over a wood-fired furnace called a Bhatti. This slow heating process ensures that the fragrance compounds are released gradually, maintaining their purity and depth.
Condensation and Collection The fragrant steam travels through a bamboo pipe into a receiver known as the Bhapka, which contains pure sandalwood oil — the base for all Kannauj attars. The sandalwood absorbs the aromatic vapors, transforming into an exquisite blend of scent and soul. Aging and Maturation Once distilled, the attar is aged in dark glass bottles or camel-skin flasks for several months. This maturation deepens its aroma, enhances smoothness, and creates the signature richness of Kannauj attars.

💧 Why Sandalwood Oil Is the Heart of Every Attar

Sandalwood oil acts as both a fixative and carrier, absorbing and preserving the natural fragrance without alcohol or synthetic chemicals. Its woody, soothing aroma complements every floral or herbal ingredient perfectly, giving Kannauj attars their long-lasting and balanced scent.

At Nature’s Essence Perfumers, we source pure Mysore sandalwood oil — ensuring that every attar we produce meets international standards for authenticity and quality.

🌍 Handmade with Love, Exported with Pride

While many modern brands use artificial essences for mass production, we continue to make attars in small batches — using copper Degs, clay seals, and traditional firewood.
Our attars are handcrafted in Kannauj and supplied worldwide to perfume houses, retailers, spas, and resellers who value authenticity over imitation.
