The freshly picked petals are placed in a copper deg filled with water. A mixture of clay and cotton seals the pot, preserving the aroma. The deg is then gently heated over a traditional wood or cow-dung fire. As the water boils, aromatic vapours rise and travel through a bamboo pipe (chonga) into a copper receiver (bhapka) cooled in water. Here, the steam condenses into liquid, carrying the rare essential oils that float gracefully to the surface.

Once collected, the first distillate may be refined through repeated distillations to enhance strength and purity. The raw attar is then transferred into special copper, glass, or traditional leather bottles (kuppi), where time becomes the true artisan.
